Almost six months ago I joined Dress for Success Denver organization. I joined because I passionately believe in their mission and unwavering dedication to serve women struggling to fight against poverty, and gender inequality to mention a few. I love the name of this year’s theme”Unleashing the Power Within.” “It represents the power and inner strength every woman has within herself, and the ability to unleash that power to make positive, rewarding healthy changes in life!”
This Saturday, Dress for Success Denver has organized its 5K Power Walk to help raise awareness and funds to support a future where women can focus on their overall well being. I learned that each mile walked represents one of the three phases our women experience as they travel on the road to success; from being unemployed and looking, to recently employed and adjusting, and the end goal to gainfully employed and ultimately succeeding. This international walk is dedicated to empower women as they work their way towards economic independence…how empowering is that! It is Posh 5280’s first time participating. Even though we expect rain, I am very excited to know that we can be there in support of a great cause. Proceeds from the 5k walk will benefit Dress for Success’ health and wellness initiative along with services and programs, which equip women with the tools to be encouraged and empowered as they work towards leading a healthy, well-balanced lifestyle that yields career success. It’s not too late to walk for a cause.https://denver.dressforsuccess.org/get-involved/events/5k-powerwalk/
Gearing up for the big walk is a very important thing to do. Not only do you need to get a good night sleep and bring your most comfortable walking shoes to the event, but eating properly pre-walk is also a must! Here are a few tips on pre workout nutrition and some foods to help you get ready for the walk!
In order to ensure you will have the most energy for the Dress for Success walk, or any sort of charity walk, a pre-workout snack or meal is imperative. Carbohydrates are your friend when you need a quick source of energy. You should eat about 30 to 60 minutes before walking so they can be digested immediately and used for energy.
Endurance Foods for your Walking
Oatmeal – Oatmeal provides a sustained release of energy into the bloodstream and helps keep you going longer.
Pasta – Pasta is full of carbohydrates. Consuming some pasta before a big walk will help you give you energy quickly.
Bananas – Bananas are great pre- or post-walk. The potassium helps prevent muscle cramps and they are a great food to re-stock your body with lost electrolytes.
Energy bars – If you prefer energy bars, pick ones with simple, natural ingredients. These are a perfect snack before you walk, or while you are walking to give you that added boost of energy!
Don’t forget the fluids!
Water is very important before, during and after you walk. Make sure you are getting hydrated before you go out for the walk, and definitely make sure you take water with you on your walk to avoid dehydration. After the walk is done, sports drinks are a great way in rehydrating your body and replacing body salts.
This is a very important and fun event for Denver! Come out and support the cause if you can, and if you want to help from home, you can always donate through their website!
